Consulate Book Club

The Consulate General of Ireland, Vancouver is delighted to invite you to the newest edition of the Consulate Book Club on Thursday, 27th August from 5:30pm to 7:30pm PT. You don't need to be a literary expert to join - everyone is welcome. However, make sure you read the book before the book club so you can engage in the discussion. Light refreshments will be provided, and we will be hosting a draw for all attendees for a $50 book voucher.

About the author:

Jonathan Swift was a poet, satirist, essayist, and clergyman who was born in Dublin in 1667. He was a prolific writer throughout his life and often published his work anonymously. In his early career he published A Tale of a Tub and The Battle of the Books. He was a founding member of the Scriblerus Club, whose members included some of the greatest writers of the age. Swift was appointed Dean of St Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin from 1713-1745, during which time he wrote and published his most famous work Gulliver’s Travels, which became one of the greatest novels in English literature.

About the book:

Gulliver's Travels follows Lemuel Gulliver, a surgeon and sea captain, who finds himself shipwrecked on Lilliput, an island inhabited by little people, whose height makes their quarrels over fashion and fame seem ridiculous. His subsequent encounters with the crude giants of Brobdingnag, the philosophical Houyhnhnms and brutish Yahoos, give Gulliver new, bitter insights into human behaviour. Swift's savage satire views mankind in a distorted hall of mirrors as a diminished, magnified and finally bestial species, presenting us with an uncompromising reflection of ourselves.

In 2026 we celebrate the 300th anniversary of the publication of this literary masterpiece.
