Join us for the launch of Diffracting the North: Contemporary Latinx Canadian Experiences and Practices in Film, New Media, and Visual Arts (Concordia University Press, 2025), a groundbreaking volume that brings much-needed visibility to Latin American and Latinx cultural production within Canada's contemporary artistic landscape.

Diffracting the North is the first book published in Canada to collectively examine the lived experiences and creative practices of Latinx Canadian filmmakers, media artists, and visual artists. Through essays, interviews, and reflections by scholars, artists, curators, and filmmakers, the volume explores questions of identity, belonging, solidarity, cultural production, and community building within Latinx Canadian contexts.

The program will conclude with an open talkback and Q&A facilitated by the editors, inviting the audience to engage directly with the ideas, experiences, and questions raised throughout the evening. Following the conversation, guests are warmly invited to stay for a small reception, offering an opportunity to connect with the editors, contributors, speakers, and fellow community members in a relaxed setting.

The book highlights how Latinx Canadian artistic practices challenge and enrich Canada's cultural landscape while recovering overlooked cultural histories and showcasing the significance of Latin American diasporas in Canada.
