About this Event

We (Above The Mud Productions) are organising a coffee hang this April.

We want to know where all the working class creatives are at, wherever you are in your career and whatever the medium. We want to bring you all together, to acknowledge each other's existence, support each other's work and offer an opportunity for community camaraderie.

We all know that the creative industries are made up with predominantly those from higher income backgrounds and that statistically is becoming more true. This industry can feel lonely and challenging for all creatives despite background but for those truly from low-income/working class/ benefit class backgrounds it can be difficult to find spaces to be heard and understood in the uniqueness of their additional challenges.

These hang outs are here to meet others with shared experiences and struggles within our industries. It’s a space for us to see how we’re doing and share any tools and tips to motivate ourselves to keep that foot in the creative door.

We’ll meet up at the National Theatre, fuel up on tea and coffee and then if the weather allows, take a stroll along the southbank if accessible for all.

Black tea and coffee will be supplied via flask for anyone who doesn’t want to or doesn’t feel able to purchase a hot drink whilst out and about. Just remember to bring along something to pop it in!

*At above the mud we define a working class creative in the following way: An individual who grew up in a household where the main income earner(s) were employed in unskilled or semi-skilled manual or industrial work, were entitled to free school meals or other support benefits because of income brackets and or lived within a council social property or the care system.

If you have any questions about your positioning in our definition of ‘Working Class’ then please reach out. We’re aiming to bring opportunities of support to those who really need it, however if you feel that we’ve been too strict or simply haven't mentioned a defining feature when you feel we should have in order to include you, we are happy to have a chat.

We look forward to meeting you :)
