Nl Family Triangle vertrekt vanuit het persoonlijke verhaal van de drie makers: Chien-Han, Ray en Wei-Yao. Chien-Han en Ray, een getrouwd lesbisch koppel, willen een kind: Chien-Han zal de zwangerschap dragen met Rays eicel. Na wikken en wegen vragen ze Chien-Hans broer Wei-Yao om sperma te doneren, zodat het DNA van het kind uit beide families afkomstig is.
Dit scenario vormt de basis voor Family Triangle, een scherp maar teder relaas over het recht en het verlangen om een gezin te stichten – en hoe tradities, gendernormen en wetgeving het vormgeven, en soms ook onmogelijk maken. Het verhaal wordt verteld in niet-chronologische scènes: broer en zus blikken terug op hun ongelijke behandeling als kind omwille van patriarchale normen in Taiwan; een advocate licht de juridische implicaties toe; Ray en Chien-Han spelen een partijtje tafeltennis om te beslissen over de achternaam van hun kind; Wei-Yao vraagt zich herhaaldelijk af of hij zich eerder oom of vader zal voelen. Door theater, humor, politieke en documentaire reflecties vakkundig met elkaar te verweven, onderzoeken de artiesten de frustraties en dankbaarheid die hun levens- en theaterreis kleuren. Uiteindelijk blijkt DNA niet de sterkste band te zijn binnen de driehoek, maar de bewuste keuze voor toewijding en zorg – een band die niet wordt erkend door de wet.

Family Triangle trouve son origine dans l’histoire personnelle de ses trois créateur·ices. Chien-Han et Ray sont un couple lesbien marié qui désire avoir un enfant ensemble. Ray fournirait l’ovule, et Chien-Han porterait l’enfant. Après réflexion, elles ont demandé au frère de Chien-Han, Wei-Yao, de leur faire don de son sperme, pour que l’ADN de l’enfant soit issu des deux familles. C’est ainsi qu’est née l’œuvre Family Triangle : de leurs réflexions, incisives mais teintées de tendresse, sur le droit et le désir de fonder une famille, et sur la façon dont ce désir est façonné et parfois mis à mal par la tradition et les attentes liées aux genres et à la loi. L’histoire est racontée dans le désordre : frère et sœur se remémorent les pressions inégales imposées par les normes patriarcales taïwanaises pendant leur enfance ; une avocate intervient sur les réalités juridiques ; Ray et Chien-Han jouent le nom de famille de leur enfant dans un match de ping-pong ; Wei-Yao se demande s’il se voit plutôt en oncle ou en père. Mêlant habilement théâtre, humour, réflexion politique et documentaire, les trois artistes expriment leur colère et leur gratitude par rapport à ce voyage entre la vie et le théâtre. Au bout du compte, dans le triangle, les liens les plus forts ne sont pas ceux du sang, mais ceux, négligés par la loi, de l’engagement et de la sollicitude.

Family Triangle originated with the ongoing story of its three creators: Chien-Han, Ray, and Wei-Yao. Chien-Han and Ray are a married same sex couple who envision having a child: Chien-Han would carry the pregnancy while Ray would provide the egg. After reflection, they ask Chien-Han's brother Wei-Yao to donate his sperm, so the child's DNA would come from both families. This scenario gave birth to Family Triangle, their sharp yet tender exploration of the right and desire to form a family—how it is shaped, and sometimes wounded, by tradition, gender expectations, and the law. The story is told through non-chronological scenes—the siblings recall the uneven pressures placed on them as kids by Taiwan’s patriarchal norms; a lawyer confronts the legal realities; Ray and Chien-Han play a match of table tennis to decide their child’s surname; Wei-Yao faces the recurring question of whether he’ll feel like an uncle or a father.
Through a skilful combination of theatre, humour, political reflection, and documentary material, they navigate the rage and gratitude of this life-and-theatre journey. Within the triangle, the deepest bond is ultimately not DNA, but the choice of commitment and care that laws fail to recognise.
