NlBâtir ontstond uit een verontrustende vaststelling van Salim Djaferi: de opvallende gelijkenis tussen de wijk in Seine-Saint-Denis waar hij opgroeide, en de woonwijken die in de jaren ‘50 in Frans Algerije werden gebouwd. Na het succes van Koulounisation, waarin hij de relatie tussen taal en kolonisatie onderzocht, buigt Djaferi zich nu over de verbanden tussen kolonie en voorstad, en in bredere zin tussen ras en ruimte.
In Djaferi’s documentair theater spelen documenten een centrale rol. Alleen op scène reconstrueert hij zijn onderzoek: zonder hiërarchisch onderscheid combineert hij publieke archieven over sociale huisvesting met persoonlijke verhalen, verzameld bij naasten en bewoners die hij op het podium vertolkt. Hij belichaamt als het ware de archieven die niet alleen het gewicht van deze verhalen dragen, maar ook hun stilzwijgen. Wat verbergen ze van de levens die ze geacht worden te documenteren? Via een spel met het publiek onderzoekt Djaferi hoe sociale huisvesting vanaf het begin werd bekeken door een raciale lens, zonder dat dit ooit werd benoemd. Bâtir tracht de koloniale erfenis te ontmantelen die onzichtbare muren in onze identiteiten heeft opgetrokken. Door onze manieren van wonen in de stad én op het podium te bevragen, toont de voorstelling hoe de scène een levendige werf voor verandering wordt.

Bâtir naît d'une découverte troublante de Salim Djaferi : la ressemblance frappante entre la cité de Seine-Saint-Denis où il a grandi, et les cités construites en Algérie française dans les années 50. Après le succès de son spectacle Koulounisation, qui explorait les liens entre la langue et la colonisation, Djaferi se penche cette fois sur les liens entre colonie et banlieue, et plus largement, entre race et espace. Dans le théâtre documentaire de Djaferi, les documents occupent une place centrale. Seul en scène, il retrace son enquête : il mêle sans hiérarchie des archives publiques, relatives à la construction des logements sociaux, et des récits personnels vivants collectés auprès de ses proches et des habitant·es, qu’il incarne sur scène. Son corps en action fait apparaître des archives qui portent le poids des récits établis, mais aussi de leurs silences. Que dissimulent-elles des vécus qu’elles prétendent documenter ? Dans un jeu partagé avec le public, Djaferi interroge comment la question du logement social a été, dès l'origine, envisagée sous le prisme de la race, sans jamais la nommer. Du foyer au théâtre, Bâtir cherche à déconstruire l’héritage colonial qui a érigé les murs invisibles de nos identités, scrutant nos façons d’habiter la ville et la scène – devenue chantier vivant de réinvention.

Bâtir was born out of a disturbing discovery made by Salim Djaferi: the striking resemblance between the housing estate in Seine-Saint-Denis where he grew up, and the housing estates built in French Algeria in the 1950s. Following the success of his theatre performance Koulounisation, which explored the links between language and colonisation, Djaferi now turns his attention to the links between colonies and suburbs, and more broadly, between race and space. Documents play a central role in Djaferi’s documentary theatre. Alone on stage, he recounts his investigation, mixing public archives relating to the construction of social housing with vivid personal accounts collected from those close to him and residents, whom he embodies on stage. His body in action brings to light archives that carry the weight of established narratives, but also of their silences. What do they conceal about the experiences they claim to document? In a game shared with the audience, Djaferi questions how the issue of social housing has, from the outset, been viewed through the prism of race—without ever naming it. Bâtir seeks to deconstruct the colonial legacy that has erected the invisible walls of our identities, scrutinising the ways in which we inhabit the city and the stage—which has become a living construction-site of reinvention.
