About this Event

The creation of Bridgeton and the Calton in the 18th century signalled the start of Glasgow’s transition from a mercantile to an industrial city.

In the late 1700s their dense communities of hand-loom weavers saw the birth of labour protests and radical politics, beginning with Scotland’s first major industrial dispute, the 1787 Calton weavers' strike, and the death of six protesters at Drygate Bridge.

Fergus Sutherland tells the story.
