Book Launch - Migrants, Minorities, and the History of British Boxing

As part of Black History Month, join us for the launch of Migrants, Minorities and the History of British Boxing, a new book by DMU Historian Dr David Dee, published by Oxford University Press.

In this special free event, David will be in conversation with Professor Panikos Panayi, Interim Director of the Institute of Global Challenges and Cultures and an internationally renowned historian of migration, ethnicity and multiculturalism. Together, they will explore how boxing offers a powerful lens through which to understand the histories of migration, race, ethnicity and belonging in modern Britain.

Reflecting the themes of Black History Month, the discussion will consider the profound contribution of Black British boxers and communities to the sport, while also examining the wider experiences of migrant and minority groups whose stories have shaped boxing and, in turn, British society. Drawing on research from the new book, the conversation will highlight the ways in which the boxing ring has been a site of both opportunity and prejudice, resistance and identity.

The event will conclude with an audience Q&A. Whether you are interested in sport, history, race and ethnicity, or modern Britain, this promises to be an engaging and thought-provoking evening.
