The ‘good’ outlaw is a major and recurring trope in medieval literature.Popularised by tales of Robin Hood, the outlaw is often portrayed as a social rebel and a romantic hero fighting against corrupt, cowardly, and greedy authorities.
The reality behind the fiction was much grimmer.
