This year's theme, "Black August Arc of Liberation Commemoration: From Resistance to Power," encapsulates the essence of Black August. It acknowledges the intertwined nature of struggle and celebration, honoring the legacy of Black freedom fighters while embracing the joy and resilience that sustain our communities.
The BOSS Black August Arc of Liberation Commemoration was born out of a deep respect for the legacy of Black August—a time to honor those who’ve resisted, organized, and endured. We ground this gathering in the power of art, the soul of culture, the urgency of political education, and the necessity of economic empowerment.
Join us in Oakland on August 29, 2026, for a day of remembrance, empowerment, and unity. Together, we will celebrate the enduring spirit of Black resistance and the joy that propels us forward.
At its inaugural Black August Block Party in August 2021, BOSS unveiled 'The Arc of Liberation' mural - a culmination of art, culture, and political education honoring the heroes and fighters whose shoulders we stand on and whose activism we continue today.
As we commemorate , the principles, challenges and acknowledge the brothers and sisters still imprisoned, it is fitting that we embrace the theme of Impact to highlight the powerful contributions of individuals and groups striving to create positive change within our community.
🖤 Black August: Arc of Liberation Commemoration
This is what collective power looks like.
As we honor the legacy of George Jackson, Fannie Lou Hamer, Angela Davis, Assata Shakur, Malcolm X, and countless other freedom fighters, we gather.
Art. Culture. Political Education. Economic Empowerment.
These are the living pillars of Black August. And they are alive through every organization standing with us.
From healing circles to economic opportunity, from voter education to community care—our partners represent the full spectrum of what liberation work looks like in practice:
Political Education & Voter Power
Art, Culture & Expression
Economic Empowerment & Entrepreneurship
Healing, Health & Wholeness
And of course, BOSS. Building opportunities. Building liberation.
This is a sacred space for healing, remembering, and amplifying.
This is the Arc of Liberation.
This is Black August.
