About this Event

The 1906 earthquake displaced 300,000 people from San Francisco. George Pardee, as governor, helped people recover and return to rebuild their lives. Among them were approximately 25,000 Chinese who lived in San Francisco’s Chinatown before the earthquake. Not all returned to SF. The local political leaders, especially the mayor of SF, wanted the Chinese to be relocated in Hunter’s Point to release SF Chinatown real estate for developers. George Pardee, with directions from President Teddy Roosevelt, was instrumental in facilitating the return of 20,000 Chinese to their former location in Chinatown. Oakland’s Chinatown grew by approximately 5,000 at this time. Among them were some wealthy Chinese businessmen who made significant commercial businesses and developments in Oakland.

Paul Silberstein, PHM Board Member, will give a talk about this historical event. The talk will be followed by a champagne reception with sweets and savories, including Dim Sum specialties.
