Biometrics, Facial Recognition and Collective Privacy Clinic
About this Event
Facial recognition can create significant privacy and public trust issues. This practical clinic explores how to govern biometric technology responsibly in Western Australia.
Using a WA facial-recognition case as a practical reference, this session examines biometric privacy, collective privacy, scope creep, data quality, false-match risks, transparency, and public trust.
The clinic is designed for professionals working at the intersection of privacy, AI governance, public safety, local government, civic technology, law, policy, and community interests. You will work through practical case material and governance scenarios to identify risks and develop actions that can be applied in your organisation.
Who this is for
This session is designed for:
- Public safety and surveillance professionals
- Local government leaders, officers, and technology teams
- Civic technology practitioners
- Legal, privacy, and policy professionals

- AI governance and assurance professionals
What we will do together
- Assess biometric privacy risks: Explore why facial images and biometric information require careful handling and how privacy obligations can arise.
- Examine collective privacy and scope creep: Consider community-level impacts, function creep, surveillance concerns, and potential effects on public trust.
- Evaluate false-match risks: Examine how data quality, false positives, and false negatives can affect decisions and interventions.
- Develop transparency and accountability actions: Create practical approaches for consultation, communication, monitoring, and responsible governance.
- Apply the case to your organisation: Use structured activities to develop a governance artefact relevant to your own context.
What you will take home
- A practical Biometric Governance Assessment
- A Privacy and Scope Creep Risk Checklist
- A Transparency and Consultation Action Plan
- A governance artefact you can adapt for your organisation
Good to know
Please bring your laptop to participate in the practical activities and develop your governance artefact. You may bring relevant policies, frameworks, or public-facing materials from your organisation, but do not bring confidential personal or operational information. No technical prerequisites are required. This is a practical professional development clinic focused on governance, privacy, and responsible use of biometric technology, rather than technical implementation.
