With a former KGB officer in the Kremlin, and rumours of “assets” and Kompromat in the White House, echoes of the Cold War continue to shape our lives, culture and politics nearly 40 years after it was supposed to have ended.
Join us for a series of talks on this fascinating and important period of history. The course will offer a mix of subjects including the Space Race, the history and life behind the Iron Curtain using lots of illustrations and media. One session will include an Eastern bloc film introduced by LLD's film expert Matthew Jarron.
Each week David will offer to continue the conversation after the course for an hour over a coffee for those who wish to have a more general chat.
Tutor: David Johnson
David studied Modern History at Royal Holloway, London before going on to a career in TV and media.
David has a passion for modern history and popular culture and loves being able to bring the two together through travel and learning.
Tutor: Matthew Jarron
Matthew is Curator of Museum Services at the University of Dundee, looking after a collection of over 30,000 objects, artworks and specimens and running the D’Arcy Thompson Zoology Museum, the Tayside Medical History Museum, and the exhibition programme in the Tower Foyer & Lamb Galleries. He also has a lifelong passion for cinema and has taught film history evening classes in Dundee since 2001. His latest course, Out of the Past - the Film Noir and its Origins starts on Thursday 22nd October and is available to book here
