Archives Drop-In: Back to School

Join Islington Archives for our monthly drop-in on the last Thursday of each month to explore displays from our unique local history collections.

As the summer fades and the school year begins this month's drop-in will feature records that tell the story of education within the borough.

Islington has had many significant moments within the history of schooling; from radical roots in Newington Green including the establishment of a boarding school for girls set up by Mary Wollstonecraft in 1785, to Yvonne Conolly becoming Britain's first Black headteacher in 1969 at Ringcross School.

This drop-in will highlight some of these stories, as well as feature some of the delightful materials held in the collections covering the subject of education: posters for school fairs, photos of Victorian classrooms, and clippings celebrating the achievements across the borough.

This drop-in display will feature illustrations, photos, ephemera and press cuttings offering insight into Islington's scholastic heritage. Explore unique archive material up close and at your own pace, with an archivist on hand to answer your questions.

There is no need to book a ticket - just drop-in between 3-6pm.

Second-hand book sale

We will also be holding a sale of second-hand books, including local history titles on topics such as football, performing arts, the Blitz, and social history. The perfect opportunity to discover your next read whilst supporting the work of Islington Heritage Service.
