The APHM International Healthcare Conference & Exhibition 2026 is themed “From Volume to Value: Measuring What Matters in Healthcare Performance”. In 2025, the private healthcare sector – hospital providers and financial payers were thrown into turmoil due to the proposed increase in the cost of healthcare insurance policies. These hikes were themselves a result of unprecedented inflation in medical costs. Customer and patient outcries have since led to intervention by regulators and Ministries: Bank Negara Malaysia and both the Health and Finance ministries.

The private healthcare sector is now under scrutiny, even whilst it continues to show significant growth, as reflected in the stock prices of the listed entities. This growth may not be a given if regulators and payers continue their scrutiny of medical pricing practices. It is therefore time to reflect on the next phase of provision of safe, high-quality care that is both cost-effective and efficient. Bottom line margins may be squeezed unless healthcare providers consider productivity as the way forward – but what sort of productivity, where within the patient care cycle, and who should be responsible for improving productivity? And where and who might be partners who can work with hospitals in this whole new arena?
