Abstract
Artificial intelligence is increasingly portrayed as essential for future leaders. Yet this research examines a paradox. Although using AI may help employees work more efficiently, it may also change how others judge their potential to lead. Across a series of studies, we investigate whether employees who work with AI are perceived as investing less effort than those who work with human collaborators, and whether this perceived effort discount undermines assessments of leadership potential. The findings suggest that observers may penalize AI-assisted work even when they do not evaluate the quality of the work itself less favorably. This effect appears to be weaker among evaluators with greater AI literacy, who may be better equipped to recognize effort involved in effective AI use. The research speaks to timely questions about AI adoption, talent evaluation, and the future of leadership in organizations.
