Alan Mearns is an internationally acclaimed classical guitarist, composer, and recording artist, celebrated for his extraordinary musical imagination, refined technique, and deeply expressive interpretations.
“I haven't been as nicely surprised for many, many years! What an achievement!”
— Sergio Assad
“...a revelation. Mearns reveals himself a singular artist of extraordinary imagination... truly a next-generation phenomenon.”
— Stephen Aron, Oberlin Conservatory of Music
Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Mearns began his musical studies on the violin at age five before discovering the guitar at age ten. Moving to the United States in his late teens, he studied classical guitar performance at Appalachian State University as a Fletcher Scholar, and at Austin Peay State University, where he received the Outstanding Graduate Student Award.
As a concert artist, Mearns has performed and presented masterclasses at major venues across the United States and the United Kingdom, including Yale University, Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin, Oberlin Conservatory of Music, University of North Texas, New York Classical Guitar Society, Dallas Classical Guitar Society, Allegro Concert Series Fort Worth, and many leading festivals and concert series.
His recent Bach recording received wide critical acclaim and entered the Billboard Classical Music Chart at No. 8. His forthcoming album Lorca features innovative arrangements of Spanish music, further establishing him as one of today’s most imaginative voices in classical guitar.
Beyond the classical world, Mearns is also an accomplished performer-composer across multiple genres, including contemporary-traditional Irish music and Americana alternative-folk under the pseudonym Yes The Raven. His discography includes twelve albums spanning solo classical works, original songwriting, chamber projects, and collaborative recordings.
His work has been featured on NPR Classical, BBC Sounds UK, Radio Ulster, Guitar Salon International, and in a widely viewed video feature by Rick Beato.
In addition to his musical career, Mearns is an active poet, with recent readings at the Seamus Heaney Centre at Queen’s University Belfast and other international literary venues.
Join us for an unforgettable evening with Alan Mearns in the intimate setting of the Surf & Sand Room at Asilomar Resort, celebrating world-class classical guitar as part of the Carmel Classical Guitar Retreat and Carmel Guitar Society 2026 season.
