Seminar delivered by Dr Mauricio Jacobo Romero from CRUK
bio: I completed my PhD in Computer Science with a specialisation in Artificial Intelligence. I began my career as a research assistant in the supercomputing department at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. After my PhD, I held postdoctoral positions at the University of Kent and the University of Manchester. In 2024, I joined the CRUK National Biomarker Centre as a research software engineer. My main research interests are complex systems and Gaussian processes in machine learning.
Overview of the talk:
Artificial intelligence is often perceived as synonymous with conversational chatbots, yet it encompasses a wide range of algorithms designed to address problems with varied data types and constraints. This talk focuses on cancer trial tracking as a challenging and impactful application of AI, where protocol deviations must be identified and classified from sparse, unstructured clinical reports. The presentation will introduce the data context of cancer trial tracking, highlight the key challenges in applying natural language processing to this domain, and discuss how appropriate AI techniques can support deviation detection, reporting, and ultimately improvements in trial efficiency and cost reduction.
The talk will be held in person, in the Emmeline Suite at the Christabel Pankhurst Institute at the University of Manchester, and also via a Teams link (sent out with the meeting details):
