Adak Alaska is one of the remote and isolated Aleutian Islands. From World War II to 1997, it served as a military post, first to defend the Aleutians against a Japanese invasion and later as a Cold War listening station. From a height of 90,000 troops sent to retake two other islands taken by the Japanese, to its eventual drawdown and closure in 1997, this place has a fascinating history in addition to its wild beauty. Now with a tiny population of permanent residents and many military buildings left to the elements, Adak is a picture of beautiful decay. Come learn about the natural and human history of this wild and remote place from Recreation Specialist Jenni Remillard as she shares about her recent trip to the island with her father, who was stationed there in the 1970’s.Food available! The lecture starts at 6pm, but doors open at 5:30 for anyone who wants to order dinner delivered from Siren's Lure Teahouse and Bakery. Menu and prices will be added soon.
