This exhibition presents two new site-specific installations by Ming-Jer Kuo: Urban Constellations, from his ongoing Cemetery Series, featuring large-scale vinyl image installations inspired by New York City's cemeteries; and Backtracking the Unseen, a mixed-media installation combining images on acetate with a suspended chandelier constructed from the artist's personal archive of smartphone photographs. Together, these works explore memory, mortality, urban space, and the ways images shape our understanding of place and time.
Inspired by the complexity of cities, Kuo examines urban space through shifting perspectives and changes in scale. His work reveals the hidden structures of metropolitan life, exploring how memory, infrastructure, and human activity shape the contemporary city.
Urban Constellations, from the Cemetery Series, investigates cemeteries as the "negative space" of the city. Aerial views of tombstones and burial grounds from nineteen New York cemeteries are transformed into images resembling astronomical photographs, where graves become stars and burial grounds become constellations. The installation projects these images across the gallery walls and ceiling, inviting visitors to look upward from the imagined perspective of those buried below. Echoing the celestial ceiling of Grand Central Terminal, the work transforms symbols of death into a luminous urban sky, encouraging reflection on memory, place, and mortality.
In Backtracking the Unseen, Kuo retrieves hundreds of forgotten sky photographs captured on his smartphone since 2016 and assembles them into a suspended chandelier. Transforming an invisible digital archive into a shared physical experience, the work reflects on the overwhelming accumulation of images in the smartphone era and asks how photographs continue to shape memory long after they disappear from everyday view.
