This coming Ullambana, we invite you to do dana with your family and friends and dedicate merits.
About this Event

供养三宝,福慧增长;

As the Ullambana Festival approaches, we warmly invite you to come along with your family and friends to make offerings to the Sangha. Through this wholesome act, may we dedicate the merits to the well-being and good health of our parents in this present life; to relieve our ancestors of suffering and bring them peace and happiness; and may all sentient beings benefit from the Dharma and attain enlightenment.

The fifteenth day of the seventh lunar month marks the Ullambana Festival. It is an important occasion for expressing filial piety, practising generosity in offerings, and cultivating merits.

The monastic community gathers on this day after the three-month Rain Retreat is completed, reflecting on their practice and encouraging one another. The Buddha rejoiced, seeing the monastics in harmony and witnessing the progress of his disciples on the path. Hence, this day is also known as Buddha's Joyful Day.

The Ullambana Sutra recounts how Venerable Maudgalyāyana, wishing to repay his mother's kindness, made offerings to the monastics of the ten directions on Buddha's Joyful Day. He then dedicated the merits to his departed mother, enabling her to be freed from suffering and attain peace and happiness. Since then, the Ullambana offering to the Sangha has become a Buddhist tradition.

Making offerings to the Sangha on Buddha's Joyful Day—including food, robes, medicine and other requisites for the monastic community—not only enables one to cultivate abundant merit and wisdom, but also allows the merits to be dedicated to one's parents, ancestors, and all sentient beings. In this way, one fulfills the noble practice of repaying kindness, benefiting oneself and others alike.

By making offerings to the Triple Gem, may merit and wisdom increase.
By honoring our parents and repaying their kindness, may immeasurable merits be attained.
