Brian Hallstoos will join the 2026 Black History and Reading Challenge to discuss his new book "Sol Butler: An Olympian’s Odyssey through Jim Crow America" in the First Floor Program Room at Carnegie-Stout Public Library in Dubuque at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 29, 2026. Everyone is welcome to attend this free event.
In his new biography of Sol Butler, author Brian Hallstoos tells the story of a Black athlete’s canny use of middle-class values and relationships to transcend the economic and social barriers imposed by white supremacy. Sol Butler was the first Black student at the University of Dubuque, a four-year starter for UD’s football team, a record-setting sprinter and long jumper, an Olympian at the 1920 Summer Games, and a successful sports entrepreneur.
Brian Hallstoos is a professor of history at the University of Dubuque, where he teaches courses on African American health, education, music, and sports. The 2026 Black History and Reading Challenge is a monthly book discussion which meets at Carnegie-Stout Public Library in partnership with Dubuque Community Schools and Faces and Voices Cultural Celebration.
The event is free and everyone is welcome. For more information, please call the Library at 563-589-4225 or visit us at carnegiestout.org.
