Hong Kong’s Dawn Walk from Darkness into Light
About this Event

English Version

Overview

Around the world, hundreds of thousands of people gather every year in the pre-dawn hours to walk together from darkness into the morning light, a powerful global movement symbolising hope, remembrance, and suicide prevention.

This Suicide Awareness Month, The New Normal Charity is bringing this to Hong Kong with our very own 曦望之行 | Journey of Hope at Victoria Peak.

In Cantonese, 「曦」 (hei1) represents the very first light of dawn—the morning glow that breaks after the longest night. Combined with 「望」(gazing) , it forms 「曦望」(gazing into the morning sun), a play on the word 「希望」 (hope), which reminds us that light always returns.

Whether you are a suicide survivor, honouring a lost loved one, or standing in solidarity as an advocate for mental health, this space is for you.

The Global Darkness-to-Light Movement

  • Where It Started: The movement was pioneered by Irish suicide prevention charity Pieta, which launched the first Darkness Into Light walk in Dublin’s Phoenix Park in 2009. What began with 400 people walking in pre-dawn darkness has expanded into a global phenomenon.
  • Today, over 200,000 people across more than 20 countries (including the UK, US, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and Spain) gather every year to walk together as dawn breaks.

No matter how dark the night feels, the sun will rise, and no one has to walk through the dark alone.

Together we will walk around Victoria Peak so we can gather together to watch the first rays of morning light sweep across Hong Kong’s skyline and Victoria Harbour.

A Keepsake to Carry: Custom Silk Bandanas

Every participant will receive an exclusively designed, single-edition illustrated silk bandana designed by arc ana.

arc ana: Arc ana studio is a strategy-first design studio building branding for women founders creating the next generation of leading businesses and organisations.

Ahead of the walk, you will have the opportunity to custom-print a name, date, or personal message onto your bandana with local artists. This will allow you to carry lost loved ones or a message to yourself or others on the day.
