Your Data, Their Price: A Town Hall on Surveillance Pricing

Working families are struggling with rising costs, from housing and groceries to everyday essentials. At the same time, corporations are collecting more personal data than ever before, including our shopping habits, purchase history, location, online activity and more.
Now, the technology exists to use that data, along with algorithms and artificial intelligence, to determine how much an individual consumer may be willing to pay for a product.
That’s surveillance pricing. And we have an opportunity to stop it before it becomes widespread.
Surveillance pricing could mean two people shopping for the exact same product at the exact same time are shown two different prices, based on what a company’s algorithm knows about them. For working people already facing a cost-of-living crisis, that could make an unfair system even worse.
