Intro to Spoon Carving with Vancouver Spoon Club

Join us for the meditative craft of spoon carving!

This beginner-friendly class is hosted by the Vancouver Spoon Club and is focused on the basics of getting comfortable with hand tools, carving techniques, and working with greenwood. The class will involve the use of straight knives and hook knives, as well as discussion of the process of carving your very own spoon, from living tree to wooden eating utensil.

This two-hour class is an introduction to the craft and is best suited for folks who are interested in learning a new skill and getting comfortable working safely with sharp tools. We’ll focus on learning the cuts and techniques you’ll need to keep developing your carving practice, rather than trying to rush toward a finished spoon. You may very well leave with a spoon, but there’s no expectation that you will!

The Vancouver Spoon Club also offers free ongoing drop-ins for folks who have taken a class, giving you a chance to keep practicing, ask questions, and continue building your skills. Spoon carving is a great craft to take into the colder months, offering a slow, hands-on way to spend time with your hands and make something useful in the process.
