Yoga in Balboa Park is a fun and affordable way to make up classes. We practice outside in a beautiful park about once a month on Fridays, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
I offer this experience on a sliding-scale for students. Studio yoga often costs $25 or more for a 1-hour class. Suggested donation for this 2-hour class is: $10-20 or $5-10 for low income. Consider the value you take from the class.
We meet about 10:00 a.m. and take a few minutes to chat about the class and get acquainted. We begin class with a silent meditation, and then a yin practice. Yin Yoga works with the deeper connective tissues of the body; specifically muscle fascia. Poses are held for up to 5 minutes each, and are practiced on the ground with the support of the earth.
Connecting with the earth is important for our energetic balance. To learn more about Earthing or Grounding and these health benefits, follow this link: http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2012/11/04/why-does-walking-barefoot-on-the-earth-make-you-feel-better.aspx
About half-way, we'll do a short walking meditation, and then a yang practice which incorporates Surya Namaskara (sun salutation), standing poses, and balance poses. We close with optional partner and group poses.
You are welcome to join one or both phases of the class, we're casual--just sneak up and roll out your mat... or curl your toes into the soft grass and enjoy!

If you've never done yin yoga you'll notice many of the asanas are familiar, but the names are different. In his informative Yin Yoga website, Bernie Clark says:
"The pose may look the same, but the intention is different. The yin pose of Swan looks identical to the yang pose of Pigeon, but in Pigeon, as in most yang poses, the muscles are the targets. In a yang pose, we engage the muscles and stretch them. In the yin practice, we relax the muscles; we aim our intention into the joints and the deep tissues wrapping them, not the more superficial tissues of the muscles or skin." [1]
