What is the show about?

In this show the artist explores what it looks like when faith, heritage, and culture are forced to deal with their conflicting interests? When generational history and legacy are passed down through craft and folklore are fragmented by diaspora. How we recover and address that loss? What does that culture looks like now? A culture shaped by religion and colonialism.

This tells the story of those who are distanced from their own traditions.
Who find their identity severed by their faith, their beliefs challenged by their location and their connection to heritage severed. Through painted and installed works.

Who is Surface Ritual?

Surface Ritual (Philip Morrell) is a multidisciplinary creative, who applies his work to promote Ghanaian culture. Using visuals to continue on the customarily oral passage of tales. He focuses on Ancient folklore, Adinkra symbology, and traditional Kente weaves. Looking to reconnect with a culture replaced with historically colonial values, and pass on the lesser known stories of his heritage.
