About this Event
Led by Janette Porter, Lecturer at LJMU who has worked closely with communities affected by homelessness, addiction, and mental health challenges, this session shares the story behind the project and the collaborative process that shaped it. The workshop includes:
See the Blanket
Participants will have the chance to view the handmade blanket created in partnership with individuals experiencing homelessness
Hear the Research
You’ll hear how the project emerged from long‑term engagement with marginalised groups, the symbolism and necessity of sleeping bags in unstable living conditions, and how creative work can open conversations about housing insecurity, dignity, and visibility. The session will discuss how Out the Bag became a shared space for storytelling, co‑creation, and advocacy.
Learn to Sew
Participants will be guided through simple hand‑sewing techniques inspired by the original blanket‑making process. The activity offers an accessible way to connect with the themes of the project and reflect on how creativity can support community voice and resilience. No experience is needed, and all materials will be provided.
