Prerequisite Requirements
Participants should have a demonstrated ability to maneuver a canoe in a lake or flatwater setting. Instruction will be tailored to meet you where you’re at, with appropriate challenges to support learning in a safe and positive space.
What can you expect?
Two days of paddling on the Nashwaak River with instruction from certified Paddle Canada instructor(s).
The course location will be on Killarney Lake (morning of day 1) and the Nashwaak River. Participants should be prepared to travel to the Stanley/Nashwaak Bridge area on day 2. Location of training may move depending on water levels.
Tentative Schedule
Day One: Safety briefing, course overview, skill assessment, and flatwater-to-moving-water skill development
Location: Killarney Lake / Nashwaak River
Day Two: Continued skill development and river run
Location: Nashwaak River within 1.0 hour of Fredericton (based on conditions)

What do you need?
A tandem canoe suitable for moving water (contact me if this is a barrier. You may be able to occupy a seat in a canoe that another participant brings. There are also a limited number of canoes available to rent for a fee. Contact to discuss.
Paddles (preferably with a T-grip and square blade)
Transport Canada safety equipment (PFD/life jacket, signaling device, bailing device, throw rope)
Cold water clothing. Being dressed for the weather and water is important for your comfort and safety. A drysuit or wetsuit is ideal, but not required to participate. You will need a change of clothes and extra layers, preferably not cotton.
Close toed shoes that can be worn in the water.
Personal gear for safe and comfortable days on the water (water, snacks, lunch, sunscreen etc.)
A vehicle (participants will coordinate shuttles; you may need to drive)
Cost
$250 per participant
A $125 deposit is required to reserve your spot, with the remaining balance due by June 5, 2026. Message for payment details.
Do you need a paddling partner?
No. Participants will rotate partners throughout the course, creating opportunities to learn from different people. If you register with a partner, you’ll still have time to paddle together.
Is certification available?
Yes. There is an option to pursue Paddle Canada Introduction to Moving Water Canoe certification. This can be discussed with your instructor during the course. The primary focus, however, is skill development and confidence-building.
