Description:

• A new kind of Chinese contest — built around real conversation

This year's contest puts the spotlight on communication. Instead of memorized recitation, each student chooses a topic they care about, prepares a short presentation, and then has a live, friendly conversation — answering questions from the judges and from other students. It's a chance for the participants to use Chinese the way it's meant to be used: to connect, share, and think on their feet.

• What you will do

Choose a topic that you like or are familiar with. Topics could include, but are not limited to family, culture, art, science, contemporaty life or global challenges.

Give a 2-minute presentation on your chosen topic or talent showcase— sing, recite, play an instrument, and more.

Talk with judges and peers in a warm, encouraging Q&D round.

• Who can participate

Every student belongs here. We run two divisions — Heritage (Chinese spoken at home) and Non-Heritage (learning at school) — and four levels from Beginner to Advanced, so students are always grouped fairly.

Preparation tips will be shared during orientation ( details will be given later).

Tentative time schedule:

9:00 - 9:30-Judges arrive for briefing/On-site check in

9:30 - 10:30 - Opening Ceremony

10:30 - 12:00-Presentation, individual break-up rooms

12:00 -1:30 - Judges conference

1:30 - 2:30 - Award Ceremony

We do our very best to place students in groups of comparable age and ability. Please read the descriptions below and select the ones that BEST describe the applicant.

Definition of Heritage Categories (please select the option that BEST describes the applicant)

• Heritage: Parents or guardians speak Chinese at home.

• Non-Heritage: Parents or guardians do not speak Chinese at home.

Definition of Age Groups

• LLE - Prek, K and 1st Grade
• LE - Lower Elementary - 2nd to 3rd Grade
• UE - Upper Elementary: 4th to 5th Grade
• MS - Middle School: 6th to 8th Grade
• HS - High School: 9th to 12th Grade
• UNI - University Students

Definition of Skill Levels for Non-Heritage Students

• Beginner: Student is in 1st year of Chinese language study
• Intermediate - Low (only for high school ) : Students is in 2nd year of Chinese language study
• Intermediate - High (only for high school): Student is in 3rd year of Chinese language study
• Advanced: Student is in 4th year or beyond of Chinese language study

Teacher Sponsorship

All participants must be students of a teacher who is a WACLT member. Teachers, please make sure your WACLT membership is current. You may pay dues on this site (select 'WACLT Membership dues').

Payment Method

We ONLY accept online payments.

Registration Deadline: Oct 31st

• All registration fees must be paid before the speech contest. Students who do not pay prior to the start of the contest will be ineligible to compete.
