Wild Ingleborough nursery plant survival monitoring
About this Event
We will be monitoring the plug planting we carried out in autumn 2025. These plugs were grown in our upland plant nursery and were a mixture of hay meadow, rush pasture and limestone pavement species. The results will help to determine survival rates and will inform future planting techniques.
Time -
9:30am - 3:30pm
Location -
We work across the Wild Ingleborough project area which lies in the vicinity of Ribblehead (see the map on https://www.wildingleborough.com/visit).
We will email details regarding meeting points, parking and details of the planned activity 2 days beforehand to allow us to check the weather forecast and adapt plans if needed.
Nearest Train Station -
Ribblehead Station.
If you would like to book on to one of our Task Days and are planning to arrive by train then please let us know so we can arrange picking you up if you are comfortable car sharing.
What to expect -
* You will be working outdoors around Ingleborough, between 350-400m. There is a 10-15 minute walk to the survey areas, depending on the site this might be uphill and across uneven terrain. We will be carrying tools, equipment, and personal belongings to the work site and being out in the elements all day.
* In clear weather you will be rewarded with beautiful views of the Yorkshire Dales! However it can be very variable weather here and coping with windchill and wet weather (even in summer) can be challenging so come prepared. We do have some extra layers and wind-proofs if you need something. Furthermore in sunny weather it is very exposed on the side of Ingleborough so be prepared with suncream and sun hats.
* The task itself will involve surveying and counting up to 5 species which have been planted in the monitoring plots. Training and ID sheets will be provided on the day.
Facilities -
Please note there are no toilet facilities on site itself, there is a toilet our Colt Park office, we will pass by this at the beginning and end of day. Mobile phone signal is very poor across the area.
Who can get involved -
* You don't need to have any experience as training is provided.
* You will need to be physically fit and comfortable with sitting on kneeling down whilst surveying to get a close view of the plants.
What to bring -
* Plenty of layers of warm outdoor clothing that you don't mind getting muddy as we will be kneeling down to get a close view of the plants.
* In summer a hat and sun cream are essential as we will be working out in the open without shade. Waterproof layers which can also be used as a windproof layer.
* Sturdy footwear, boots are recommended, as some of planting locations are in uneven, rough terrain.
* Plenty of food and water for the day. There is no shop nearby.
* Tools, gloves and training will be provided by the team on the day.
