Ever wondered why you're waiting at a red light when there seems to be no traffic at all? The answer is often surprisingly simple: our traffic systems can only make decisions based on what they can "see".

But that is beginning to change. Emerging technologies such as smart sensors, connected vehicles and autonomous vehicles are helping traffic systems better "see" what's happening on our roads, even when only part of the picture is available. That means smarter decisions to reduce congestion, improve safety and get more from existing infrastructure. Together we'll discover how emerging technologies could help our cities move more efficiently—not only through new roads, but by giving traffic systems a clearer picture of what's happening on our roads.

Dr Wai Wong is a Senior Lecturer in Transportation Engineering at the University of Canterbury. His research explores how emerging transport technologies—including smart sensing, connected vehicles and artificial intelligence—can make transport systems more efficient, safer and more sustainable. He works with researchers around the world to develop new ways of helping cities better understand and manage traffic using limited real-world information.
