About this Event
Saturday August 1st is Whitby Fossil Day and to celebrate we're offering a special 'Fossil Foray' on Tate Hill Sands and East Scar. The Fossil Foray will be led by Fossiliam (palaeontologist Dr Liam Herringshaw) and a fabulous group of volunteers. All funds raised will go to our charity, Earth Science Outreach UK.
We will meet at 10am on Tate Hill Sands, the beach on the eastern side of Whitby harbour. As the tide goes out, we will spend some time scouring the shingle for fossils and other interesting items. Around 11am, we will use the slipways to cross the harbour wall onto East Scar, below Whitby Abbey, where we can continue our foray. We hope to find local fossils from the Lower and Middle Jurassic rocks, including ammonites, bivalves, fossil plants and dinosaur footprints. We might also find 'erratic' fossils that have washed out of the Ice Age clays or been brought to Whitby by boat. The foray will finish at 12pm on East Scar.
The Fossil Foray is suitable for all ages, but is pitched primarily at those aged 6 and up. All participants aged 6 and up will need to book a ticket. Warm, waterproof clothing is always recommended, even in August, as is beach-suitable footwear such as wellies or walking boots. Even on a hot day, the rocks can be slippery and the shady beaches can be whipped by a cold North Sea wind!
After the foray is finished, please head up to Whitby Museum in Pannett Park to show them your finest finds and take part in more Fossil Day activities.
