About this Event
This is a partnership event by the Welsh Centre for International Affairs, Cardiff University School of Law & Politics, the Human Rights Consortium Cymru, Quakers in Wales and the National Education Union Cymru.
We are concerned about the erosion of human rights, specifically freedom of expression and freedom of assembly, around the world as a result of legislation, policies and practice targeting peaceful protests. The exercise of these rights – which are protected by such instruments as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and the European Convention on Human Rights, and, in the UK, the Human Rights Act – is essential for peaceful protests, which so often underpin progressive social change.
The event will explore global impacts of restrictive legislation, policies on and policing of peaceful protests and examine the situation of the UK as a case-study from the perspective of international human rights law. In doing so, it aims to draw attention to the arguments of individuals who have been arrested or charged under counter-terrorism legislation for civil disobedience, and civil society organisations supporting them.
The event will be chaired by Dr Sejal Parmar from Cardiff University School of Law & Politics and we will hear from Dr Michael Hamilton, Legal Adviser (civic space and the right to protest), Amnesty International, Ali Lochhead from Defend our Juries and Hussein Said from Stand up to Racism/ Justice for Kwabena.
