Join Jenifer Hawkins, on a walk uncovering the stories of the remarkable sportsmen - and the families behind them - who are buried here in York Cemetery.
Discover champions, pioneers and local legends whose achievements span boxing, cricket, football, golf, rugby, horse racing, speedway and bowls. Some represented GB, others were the first of their kind.
Among those we'll visit are:
🥊 Frank Fowler - Boxer and father of retired headteacher and singer Steve Cassidy.
⛳ Archie Harrower - A passionate golf promoter and enthusiast who helped develop the game locally.
🏏 Roger Iddison - Lancashire and Yorkshire cricketer, widely regarded as Yorkshire's first captain.
🏇 Simeon Templeman - A highly successful jockey, famous for his distinctive riding style.
⚽ Hugh Kitchin - Chairman of York City Football Club during the club's unforgettable 1955 FA Cup semi-final run against eventual winners Newcastle United.
🏏 Richard Letby – Landlord of the Cricketers Arms and the driving force behind York Cricket Club for over 50 years, when the club played on ground close to where York railway station now stands.
Whether you're a sports enthusiast, local history lover, cricket fan, football supporter, or simply curious about York's hidden stories, this walk offers a unique glimpse into the city's rich sporting heritage.
Meet at the Chapel at 2pm, the guided walk will be approximately 1 hr and 30 mins. This is an outside event so please dress accordingly.
Just come along, no need for a ticket!
We suggest a donation of £5, or £2 for Friends and children.
