Volunteer Led Tour at Bessie Surtees House

Join us for a fascinating volunteer-led tour of Bessie Surtees House, one of Newcastle’s most remarkable historic buildings. This beautifully preserved 16th and 17th-century merchant’s house offers a glimpse into the city’s past, from its stunning Jacobean architecture to the famous love story of Bessie Surtees and John Scott.

Our knowledgeable volunteers will guide you through the house, sharing captivating stories of its former residents, the history of Newcastle’s Quayside, and the building’s role in the city’s vibrant past.

There is no parking avaliable on site, however there are many public car parks in Newcastle City Centre. As this is a working office for Historic England and English Heritage, the door has to be locked. Please ring the doorbell for your tour and you will be met by an English Heritage representative. Please note, due to the historic nature of the house, there is no lift access. Access to the public rooms are via one flight of stairs. Please contact [email protected] if you have any questions.
