Virtual Robot Building with Fusion
About this Event
Virtual Robot Building with Fusion
Ages 13–18
In Virtual Robot Building with Fusion, students explore robotics, engineering, and 3D design by creating virtual robots using Autodesk Fusion. Through hands-on design challenges, participants learn how engineers and robotics designers develop robot structures, components, and mechanisms used in manufacturing, exploration, automation, and technology industries.
Students will use professional CAD tools to design robot frames, wheels, arms, sensors, and custom parts while developing skills in engineering design, problem-solving, and innovation. Participants will learn how virtual prototyping helps engineers test and improve robotic systems before building physical models.
A unique focus of this workshop is learning how professional robotics teams build digital robots using real-world components. Students will learn how to find, download, and import vendor-provided STEP files for motors, gearboxes, wheels, bearings, sensors, structural components, and other robotic parts. They will then assemble these components into a complete robot design within Fusion, gaining hands-on experience with mechanical assemblies, constraints, fit verification, and digital prototyping techniques used in industry and competitive robotics programs.
What Students Will Learn
- Introduction to Fusion and CAD design
- Robot design and mechanical systems
- 3D modeling and assembly creation
- Importing and managing vendor STEP files
- Mechanical assembly and component integration
- Engineering design and problem-solving
- Virtual prototyping and testing
- Robotics concepts and applications
- Portfolio development and project presentation
Final Project
Students will design and present an original virtual robot that demonstrates creativity, functionality, and engineering design principles. The final robot will incorporate custom-designed components and vendor-supplied parts assembled into a complete mechanical system.
