Originally built in 1863 as a militia headquarters and barracks. In 1884 the building was used as a smallpox isolation unit for Durham. Surprisingly, the deaths at Vane Tempest were relatively low, at just 6. The stables which is situatied next to the cafe in the courtyard, was turned into a morgue which housed the infected bodies.
It is believed that the main hall in the building would’ve been the hospital, however, upon research we found out that both halls were used. One possibly used as a recovery hall while the other housed the infected.
The hall itself was a lot larger at the time. A portion of it was sold off for property development.
We’ve been to this venue many times over the years to conduct paranormal investigations. There’s no question there is something lurking in the dark with all the history this place has to offer. We’ve had our own experiences here, such as screams, footsteps and disembodied voices.
Contrary to popular belief…
❌ there’s no smallpox burials in the cemetery over the wall
❌research cannot find a name to link to the apparition of the lady in white that is reported to of been seen. A lady in white has actually been witnessed on the bridge around the corner by the dene
❌there is no history at all to connect a disfigured solider killed by a cannon to Vane Tempest. However, there is history of a solider of who committed suicide in the building
This place has lots to offer, with evidence being captured by us and others over the years!
