Unfolding Yoga
This two-day workshop series explores yoga through a critical lens. From its historical connections to Sanskrit and social structures such as caste and gender, to the ways modern yoga has been shaped by cultural, political, and global forces - Roshni will guide you through a layered exploration of yoga’s histories, tensions, and contradictions.
Saturday ~ History, Language & Authority
Explore the origins of yoga in early South Asian societies, the emergence of Sanskrit and spiritual authority, and how Brahminical patriarchy shaped yoga’s development. We’ll look at how caste, gender, and access to knowledge were woven into yoga’s textual traditions, and why this still matters today.
Sunday ~ Politics, Power & Responsibility
Building on Saturday, we’ll apply a historical and political lens to modern yoga. We will examine ideas of nationalism, cultural appropriation, and the notion of ‘decolonising yoga’. We will reflect on how these dynamics might affect the lived experiences of certain communities, and how they are navigated and responded to, both structurally and within our own practices and relationships.
Join us for an immersive and thought-provoking journey that challenges dominant narratives and deepens your relationship with yoga. Whether you’re brand new to yoga or deepening your path, this series offers an opportunity to connect with yoga’s fuller story, one that is as complex as it is beautiful, and shaped by multiple voices, histories, and ways of knowing.
