Leader: Cathy Hollis, University of ManchesterThe North Wales Platform is a Visean (Mississippian or Lower Carboniferous) age carbonate succession; it is spectacularly exposed on the Great Orme headland at Llandudno.
Outline Programme
Morning: Start 10am - Examination of the bedded carbonates of the Asbian Great Orme Limestone, which exhibit a range of shallow water sediments capped by palaeosols. Discussion on the controls on sedimentation during the Visean.
Picnic lunch
Afternoon: Examination of the overlying, Brigantian aged Bishops Quarry and Summit Limestone and evaluation of the reasons for the change in their bedding and composition compared to the underlying beds. The Craig Roft Sandstone will be seen and its source and impact on carbonate sedimentation will be considered; likewise why parts of the Great Orme are dolomitized and the importance of copper mineralisation in the area. Finish at 5pm.
The field meeting will involve some substantial walking (~5 miles/ 8 km) along footpaths, roads and well-marked tracks. There is a gradual ascent of approximately 200m from the starting point to the top of the Great Orme in the afternoon; alternatively, there is the option of returning to the town from where a tram or cable car can be taken to the summit.
GA Field Meetings are open to GA members only until 4 weeks before the date when any remaining places are open to non members.
