About this Event

This year's UBUNTU DINNER theme is The Values We Share - Celebrating the 100th anniversary of the first Black History Month, initiated by Carter G. Woodson as "Negro History Week" in February 1926. For 100 years, educators embraced Black History Month, churches amplified it, and civic groups built programming around it. Students, leaders, and global citizens have also engaged with Black history, which is not only about honoring resilience - but building cultural competency, learning from systemic injustice, and developing the leadership skills required in an increasingly diverse world.
This 100-year anniversary of Black History Month is not simply a date on the calendar; it is a powerful reminder to recognize the generations who fought for inclusion in the historical record, even when the nation resisted acknowledging their humanity. Black history is American history; it's also Africa's history. Remembering it and sharing the values that shape our collective and personal identities will help us shape current norms, cultures, and humanities.
