Saturday, November 16 – Tonle Wax: Origins of American House and TechnoTonle Wax dives deep into the soulful, gritty roots of US electronic music—a history that began with soul, funk, and disco before morphing into Chicago House and Detroit Techno. These styles emerged from American cities with strong Black communities, giving electronic music an unmistakable foundation of resistance and creativity.
“House music isn’t just music; it’s a feeling,” once said Frankie Knuckles, known as the “Godfather of House.” That feeling—a mix of hope, passion, and rebellion—found its home on Chicago’s South Side, where DJs like Ron Hardy turned warehouses into places of refuge and freedom. The transition into Detroit’s techno scene, pioneered by the likes of Juan Atkins and Derrick May, built upon that energy, adding a raw industrial edge that spoke to the city’s factory-working youth.
This Saturday, we’ll take you on a journey back to those seminal sounds and spaces, exploring the rich, cross-genre influences that gave us house, techno, and beyond. It’s music with a story, a pulse, and a purpose.
