The elderly Hirayama couple, who live in the countryside, travel to bustling post-war Tokyo to visit their two children. However, the boys, who are busy doctors and their daughter who runs a beauty salon, do not welcome them. They have neither the time nor the desire to deal with their parents. Only the widow of the boys who died in the war, Noriko, welcomes them with genuine joy, who even takes a day off to show them Tokyo. The two elderly people are eventually paid for by their children at a resort. The parents feel sick in the noisy place and travel back to Tokyo earlier than expected. However, their daughter sends them away due to her "important" evening engagement. The Hirayamas travel home the next day. The mother falls ill and dies. Their children are already arriving too late...
