We're honored to present THROUGH THE EYES OF MY MOTHER, a luminous new exhibition of paintings and sketches by Steve Smith — one of our own resident artists here at ArT @ 967 Payne — fresh from a solo exhibition at the Phipps Center for the Arts in Hudson, WI.
The title is a tribute. Steve's mother, a strong and wise Indigenous woman, taught him to look — and to truly see: to recognize the relationships between all things, to understand that all things are alive, and to honor the earth herself as sacred. His vibrant, richly detailed work reflects those teachings, alive with owls, cranes, loons, dragonflies, and butterflies gathered in natural harmony. In many of his paintings, his mother appears as the Eagle, honoring her tribal clan and the truth he carries: that we are all related.
A 1980 Fine Arts graduate of the University of Minnesota, Steve went on to teach art, to earn advanced degrees in clinical psychology, and to spend his career integrating creative arts with healing. His paintings are less planned than discovered — an intuitive conversation, as he describes it, between the artist, the canvas, and the Spirits.
Come and meet the artist, immerse yourself into the work, and join us for a warm evening of art, story, and community on the East Side of St. Paul.
