Oct 22 Day1 Conversation to Classroom: Sunrise SD’s EY Literacy Journey
Host: Trevor Reid

Info: Sunrise School Division’s early years literacy journey began with collaborative conversations to build a shared vision for improving student outcomes. This led to changes in classroom practice and the creation of a divisional literacy committee to guide and support the work.

Classrooms now reflect an approach that combines explicit instruction in foundational literacy skills with opportunities for student choice and engagement. Screening tools, diagnostics, and ongoing progress monitoring are used to inform instruction and support each learner’s growth.

With literacy support teachers in every school, educators receive ongoing coaching and collaboration. This cohesive, structured, and student-centered approach ensures all Sunrise students are supported on their path to becoming confident, successful readers.

Oct 22 Day 1 Differentiating ELL from SLD - Language + Literacy Unite
Host: Dr. Valdine Bjornson

Info: Teaching middle years + multilingual learners is both rewarding and complex. As students continue to develop academic language and literacy skills, it can be challenging to determine whether a learner is experiencing typical language development or may need additional support. This session invites educators into a thoughtful and supportive conversation about understanding students more deeply. Educators will be introduced to practical classroom strategies that can be used immediately to support instruction and guide conversations with support teams. Oct 23 Day 2 Dr. Amanda VanDerHeyden
Host: Dr. Amanda Van Der Heyden

Info: The frameworks of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), Response to Intervention (RTI), the Science of Reading and the Science of Math are all logically and empirically connected, grounded in the same science. The connecting thread is the science of learning. Learning is not something that magically emerges as a result of student discovery. Rather, learning is an outcome that is engineered by teachers when they use the science of learning to plan and deliver their instruction. MTSS is a structure to improve learning at scale by bringing more effective instruction to students. This session will detail key scientific findings pertinent to assessment, instruction, and MTSS in math. Attendees will take away tactics to try right away in their own settings and web-based resources to start their own work to adopt science-based math instruction within their MTSS structures. Free print and video resources will be provided.
