About this Event
California is home to the oldest, biggest, and tallest trees in the world, and they're all conifers. And with conifers being part of many winter solstice celebrations, I decided they would make a great discussion topic for the December meet up.
The talk will cover the overly simplified definitions of evergreen and deciduous trees; the taxonomy of conifers; their evolutionary adaptations to extreme environments; the differences between pines, spruces, and firs; and why conifers are the oldest, biggest, and tallest tress on the planet.
As always, there will be plenty of time for open discussion and getting to know each other.
For those new to this group, The STEM Sessions was created as a forum for people interested in and/or working in STEM to share their experiences, expertise, and learn from each other. I do my best to get the party started, but it's maintained by everyone's participation.
So join us. Have some food, have some beverages, and let's learn from each other.
How to find us:
We'll be meeting at 2nd&PCH in Long Beach. I'll try to secure a shaded table near the Free People store and across from Urban Outfitters. Just look for the guy with a beard, long hair, and a cowboy hat. I'll also place a sign on the table and maybe signalling tape or balloons.
