About the Director:
Hank Gevedon approaches The Sewing Circle with the meticulous eye of a craftsman and the heart of a storyteller. As an educator, he has a talent for making history come alive—an essential skill for a play that journeys from America’s birth to modern-day struggles.
At his workshop, Reptile Tool Works (founded in 1978), Hank’s devotion to historical authenticity and traditional craftsmanship shines through. His recent project, Blades That Shaped America, masterfully connects historical events through the tools that defined them. In The Sewing Circle, this same commitment to detail will bring women’s untold stories into the spotlight.
A Note from Joy:
“I’m deeply moved by both the heart and craft of this production. Hank’s passion for weaving together pivotal moments in history mirrors the way our characters work to repair the mysterious strand that connects them all. This play beautifully reveals how women’s quiet strength has shaped history—from the Revolution to modern times—while capturing those precious moments of humanity that shine even in our darkest hours. Sharing food during wartime, finding common ground across enemy lines, passing down wisdom through generations… these moments define us. As assistant director, I’m honored to help bring Hank’s vision to life with a cast of actresses who can embody these remarkable women and their stories.”
About the Show:
The Sewing Circle follows women across generations, from the Revolutionary War to modern times, as they confront pivotal moments in history. Through powerful monologues and ensemble storytelling, the play brings to light the courage and sacrifices of women whose voices are often left out of history books.
Each actress will play multiple roles, requiring a strong emotional range, versatility, and a commitment to ensemble work. Some characters require dialects, accents, or physical movement elements.
