The Right To Live, Learn & Belong | Belonging Beyond Brown and Trespass
About this Event
A Dual Documentary Screening Experience
Monday, August 10, 2026 | Doors Open: 11:00 AM | Screenings Begin: 12:00 PM ET
The Strand Theatre Oak Bluffs Avenue, Oak Bluffs, Martha’s Vineyard
The Morehouse College Center for Excellence in Education invites you to The Right to Live, Learn and Belong, a special dual-screening experience exploring the places we call home, the systems that shape our lives, and the fundamental human need to be seen, supported, and welcomed.
Presented at the historic Strand Theatre in Oak Bluffs, the program brings together two powerful documentary projects:
Belonging Beyond Brown
Belonging Beyond Brown examines the legacy of Brown v. Board of Education beyond the courtroom, including the displacement of nearly 100,000 Black educators and the lasting effects of school integration on Black students, teachers, institutions, and communities.
Through history, personal testimony, and intergenerational reflection, the film asks what was gained, what was lost, and what true belonging in education requires today.
Trespass: Portraits of Unhoused Life, Love, and Understanding
Created by Kim Watson, Trespass offers an intimate and humanizing portrait of unhoused life. Centering stories of love, resilience, identity, and understanding, the film challenges audiences to look beyond assumptions and recognize the humanity of people too often pushed to the margins.
Together, these films invite us to consider a shared question:
What does it mean to have the right to live, learn, and belong, and what happens when that right is denied?
Guests are encouraged to arrive when doors open to gather, connect, and engage with the broader experience before the screenings begin at 12:00 PM with at talkback to follow with the film directors from 2:20 to 3:00PM.
Join educators, community leaders, advocates, residents, visitors, and supporters for a meaningful afternoon of film, history, reflection, and conversation on Martha’s Vineyard.
