We are honored to welcome Leah McGhee to share her family’s experience. Her sixteen-year-old son asked his English teacher about the use of the word “aliens” in class. As a result, he received a three-day out-of-school suspension, was falsely accused of racism by the school district, and had the suspension recorded on his permanent transcript.
Leah and her husband later sued the Davidson County Board of Education—and won.
Students and Families in Attendance
Several female students and their parents from across the Cabarrus County School District will also be in attendance. These families have experienced situations involving males in restrooms or locker rooms.
They have not been asked to speak, and there is no expectation that they do so. However, if any choose to share their experiences, they will absolutely be welcome to speak.
We also extend this invitation to any students and parents who have had similar experiences. Our meeting is intended to be a safe and supportive space where students and families can feel cared for, encouraged, and informed by parents who challenged a school district in court and prevailed.
