Background

The Shearer family were at the centre of Dunfermline life in the nineteenth and early twentieth century.

Come on this walk to find out about Dunfermline-born actress Moira Shearer’s uncle James Grant Shearer the architect who designed many of Dunfermline’s most weel-kent buildings, her great grandfather Andrew Reid who introduced steam power to Dunfermline Mills, her great uncle Andrew Reid Shearer who was the first president of Dunfermline Athletic Football Club and many other notable achievements from her many relatives in our city.

The Walk

The walk starts at the bandstand in Dunfermline Public Park before moving along East Port Street before zig zagging down to the Andrew Carnegie Birthplace Museum. We will then walk up through the Abbey grounds before finishing at the Fire Station Creative.

This walk should take around 2 hours to complete and does involve hills, steps and narrow pavements. However, there will be frequent stops to point out places of interest and will be done at a gentle walking pace.

Accessibility

There is free parking opposite the Public Park at Leys Park Road Car Park. Public toilets are available at the Railway Station at the bottom of the Public Park at the start of the walk, at Abbot House midway on the walk and at the Fire Station Creative at the end of the walk. There is a café at the Fire Station Creative for a sit down upon finishing.
