Welcome to The Open Door Project, a free, youth-led community art workshop celebrating identity, culture, belonging, and community through creativity and storytelling.
Join us for a relaxed, drop-in creative workshop where you can create an original page for our collaborative community zine.
About The Open Door Project:
The Open Door Project is a youth-led grassroots community initiative created by Calgary high school students. The project is supported through the Weston Frontlines program, which supports youth-led initiatives and community projects.
Our goal is to create a welcoming space where community members can explore identity, culture, belonging, and community through creativity and storytelling.
The Open Door Project is independently organized by our youth team, with support provided through the Weston Frontlines program.
How to Register:
To participate in The Open Door Project Community Zine Workshop, please complete our Event Registration Form before attending.

After registering, participants will receive a unique Zine ID and information about the next steps, including applicable consent requirements and project materials.
Please note: Completing your Eventbrite registration does not replace the project's Event Registration Form or required consent forms.
What You'll do:
During the workshop, participants can:
- Create a community zine page
- Explore the project's four themes
- Draw, write, paint, collage, or experiment with mixed media
- Try creative prompts and activities
- Meet and create alongside other community members
- Receive creative guidance and support
- Contribute to a collaborative community project
No artistic experience is required! There is no single "right" way to create your page. Your contribution can be simple, detailed, colourful, handwritten, or a combination of different creative styles.
The Four Themes:
Your community page should connect to at least one of: Identity • Culture • Belonging • Community
You can explore one theme or combine several.
What We Provide:
We'll provide the creative materials you need, including:
- Art supplies
- Creative materials
- Creative prompts
- Photo booth for photography collage
- Guidance and support
- Snacks and refreshments
You simply need to bring yourself and your ideas!
Your Community Zine Page:
If you create a physical page at the workshop, please keep your artwork:
- US Letter size - 8.5 × 11 inches
- One-sided
- Flat enough to be scanned
Please avoid bulky or heavily raised 3D materials, as completed pages need to be scanned for the final zine.
Your completed community page may be considered for inclusion in the final The Open Door Project Community Zine, depending on your publication consent and the project's review process.
Drop-In Workshop:
The workshop runs from:
11:00 AM–2:00 PM
This is a drop-in event, so you can arrive anytime during the workshop. You do not need to stay for the entire two hours.
PLEASE NOTE: Participants under 18 must have the required parent/guardian consent completed before participating.
Additional information about registration, consent, and participation will be provided after registration.
Registered participants will receive:
- The Participant Guide
- Community Zine Creative Guidelines
- Consent information, where applicable
- Their individual Zine ID
- Additional workshop information and reminders

You don't need to be an artist. You don't need professional equipment. You don't need a specific skill level.
